Blast Kiteboarding

  • The power of video analysis!

Recently I have had to do quite a few 1-2-1 lessons with people who are generally at a stumbling block in there progression, it may be getting up on the board for the first time, doing sustained runs or maybe more advanced things such as jumps/rotations or riding strapless etc

Check out the video here: https://vimeo.com/137763067

Whilst doing these more advanced lessons and indeed whilst running our normal every day lessons I generally always have a GoPro on me and try to capture that magic moment every newbie lives for - the moment you get up on the board.

However recently whilst checking the video later in the evening I noticed a number of very small things a particular student was doing wrong - repeatedly!

This was even though I was forever giving advice to the guy on what exactly to do. So...the next lesson we met up before hand to go over the previous lessons video footage.

The student examined all the short clips in great detail and really slowed down the action so we could examine everything in great detail (the beauty of 60fps).

"Anyway we headed back into the water and bang, the student was up...every time and doing longer and longer runs back and forth along the beach - as you'd expect he was pretty ecstatic!

  • CrazyFly ATV Kitesurf Surfboard Review

For as long as I can remember I've been looking forever for a board that is good at it all instead of having to have several boards for different conditions, I think I have at last found it.

Check out our Video of the ATV here: https://vimeo.com/136129929

We've been using the ATV from CrazyFly quite a bit lately and have to say we love it. We've used it in onshore/cross shore  / light winds/ strong winds / strapped and strapless and it really does do it all with ease.

See photo's taken from video the past few weeks here....
I spoke to the guys at Iksurf mag before getting the board as I knew they'd tested it and they told me to just get it, they were that impressed with it.
It's a very very smooth ride compared to most (nice concave on base) and it also has a very nice slightly thicker than normal soft deck pad which also helps the ride (surfboards often have extremely thin deck pads and as such after a while are hard on the soles of your feet and heels)
The ATV comes standard with all you need, i.e. the Deck pads / Straps / 5 Fins so you don't have to fork out on more unexpected items, many boards you now have to pay for the extras even fins. (we would recommend a board bag though as with any surfboard)
The 6' ATV also has enough volume in it to be used by the inexperienced and is a relatively stable board at 19 1/8" for learning gybes and tacks etc
The five fins allow you to use it as standard Thruster or Quad, I've only used it as a thruster so far as this is what I'm used too.
It's a custom made board i.e. not a pop out and as such is lighter and has that softer flex to it's ride not rigid and harsh like some but it also seems to be tougher than any other customs I've used.
We weren't sure which CF board to choose for our own use and deffo believe we made the right choice...and as such I would not hesitate in recommending it to others.

  • Why choose your Kitesurfing Lessons in Porthcawl, S.Wales

So why choose Porthcawl / Aberavon for your kitesurfing lessons?

Huge empty sandy beaches Huge empty sandy beaches

After many years kitesurfing and at most of the popular kitesurf beaches around the UK I will always return home thankful that we live and kite in the area that we do.

The local beaches at both Porthcawl and Aberavon are only 15mins apart but between them they offer so much choice. One of the biggest pluses is the huge sandy beaches (SAFE) they both offer...miles of open sandy beach and normally pretty quiet as well (other than a few high days during the summer like B/H etc)

Safe in our hands Safe in our hands

Porthcawl and Aberavon are also extremely easy to get to...each literally only a few minutes off the M4

There is a core group of kitesurfers in the area and then also a regular crew from "over the bridge" from places like Bristol and the Midlands etc
The local guys and girls are very well known for being extremely friendly and always keen to offer help to both newbies and kitesurfers visiting the area.

The predominant wind direction is SW and cross onshore, there are usually waves..not always big but can make life harder for those not used to them. BUT once you are capable in the surf it will mean no two days are the same and it will turn the beach into one big open playground with the waves as ramps to boost off or rip to shreds!

Summer with Blast Kiteboarding in S.Wales Video

We are extremely fortunate to actually live in the heart of Porthcawl, a small seaside town and offering a few beaches working on different wind directions and small enough to be able to walk to all amenities such as the shops/bars/cafes/restaurants etc and you know what? We wouldn't live anywhere else.
We offer kitesurf lessons 7 days a week from March-November here in Porthcawl and Aberavon and only use current up-to date equipment from many of the best brands on the market. All our instructors are fully qualified to the highest standards and possibly equally important...are extremely passionate and motivated about this incredible sport....and this passion is infectious! There are not many instructors with more enthusiasm then our head instructor Richie!

Porthcawl has many excellent B&B's and all close to the beach (watch this space for more exciting news regards Kitesurf Accommodation for 2016 season).

We can offer a full range of lessons tailored to suit your needs whether you choose the most popular two day course or 1-2-1 lessons specialising in wave riding (Marc is current 3 x British Wavemasters Senior Champion)

  • Introducing the 5th Generation Kites from EPIC

So by now most people will have at least heard of the Epic Kiteboarding brand, or at the very least the legend that is Dimitri. The company is quite unique in that it's a small rider driven company headed by big boosting/hard charging Dimitri Maramenides and his wife Helen who are based in Hatteras USA.

After a long career as a pro-rider for several other brands inc. Airush they decided to start their own company with the goal of producing the best kites but also being able to offer the very best customer service available.

The aim is not to be the biggest kite brand in the world and dominate the market, the aim is simple...Make kites with the very best performance that are also extremely easy to use..no gimmicks, simply kites that excel whether you want to boost to the moon or rip in the surf...or just help you to progress quickly when you are just starting out in kitesurfing.

Over the past few years I have had the pleasure of spending a fair bit of time with this "crazy man" whilst on our annual group trips to Hatteras but also on a few trips to work on proto type kites and promo trips to Greece & France. This guy works harder than anyone I have ever known...long long days of emails/video/photo editing/generally everything that goes with running a successful business and then he is always motivated to kite mostly testing the latest proto kites to further improve the already hard to beat range of kites on offer.

Back in May I had the chance to try the new Screamer & Renegade 5G kites firstly in France with Dimitri and Jeroen (graphic designer) and then in Hatteras ..all sizes of both. I was worried beforehand how these new 5G kites would turn out as we loved the 4G kites so much.

Fortunately we did not need to worry, Epic have taken an already amazing kite range and injected even more performance..especially notable in the new Renegades, they now have a bit of the DNA from the Screamers. Just enough extra zest to make it truly awesome for both bigger boosting/better looping but still great in the waves. It still retains their ease of use though for beginner/intermediates...super important to us as we use them in our busy school but we also sell a lot to people just starting out in this amazing sport we all love so much.

The new 5G kites have been given a fresh new "family" look by the extremely talented Jeroen. The Epic kites are now all easier to identify with the new "E" proudly emblazoned on each model.

    The new 5G Renegade

As I'm writing this we are waiting on the first drop of kites to arrive, hopefully in time for our annual Portugal trip in a weeks time. It's amazing how a new kite makes you super keen again to get in for a session.

Here's a video we did whilst in Hatteras of the 5G Renegade

Blast Kiteboarding’s update from Marc Rowley

Marc Rowley of Blast Kiteboarding brings up to speed on their busy school, shop, brand distro and travel schedule!

The season got off to a slow start with a distinct lack of wind during spring but things are now shaping up nicely with plenty of bookings and lessons now in full flow and the water is warming up nicely and we’ve had plenty of lovely sunny / windy days.

We have just returned from a trip to S.France with Epic Kites the main purpose being to test the final prototype 5th Generation kites before their release in June. It was also an opportunity to take our team rider and instructor Tom Butler to meet the boss…Dimitri!

Tom doing what he does best...stylin' for the camera Tom doing what he does best...stylin' for the camera

We had a few amazing days especially near Leucate and Tom was able to show his mega loop skills to the full, they must have been impressive as Dimitri has now invited Tom to Paros in July for another Epic trip, this time with his son 13 y/old Cameron. Tom will also be helping us teaching at the Blast School this coming season after his winter spent teaching in Perth WA along with our regular instructor Richie, myself and of course Mrs.Blast

Between us we are ready for a super busy season introducing others to this amazing sport we obviously all love so much.

Next up is our annual trip to the Outer Banks in Hatteras N.Carolina USA, the home of the Triple SSS contests. This an amazing place with flat shallow water for miles and then 100 metres away on the other side of the island we have the Atlantic surf… check it out on Google Earth, amazing place!

On the local beaches here we are seeing a lot more surfboards, this has to be a good thing with so many good wave spots here in S.Wales but also as it opens up another side of the sport that can really get you hooked..for life!

    All the best,

    Marc & Sarah.

  • Why go on an organised Kitesurf Holiday

OK so you love kiting, you love holidays, you also love kiting in the warm sun but why do an organised kitesurf holiday with Blast (or for that matter any other organised group)

Well there are a number of good reasons to do so, for a start we do all the the donkey work. We book the all the flights, the car hire, the accommodation, and generally try to sort all the mundane stuff that can over shadow many a trip. This means you can just rock up to the airport and enjoy your holiday without all the hassle. We get everyone from single people who want to enjoy being part of a group (and get away from family etc) to small groups of mates just looking for a stress free organised trip.

The destinations are chosen to tick as many boxes as possible i.e. wind, sun, not too crowded, flat water, waves, good food, good bars, great accommodation and of course amazing company. ;-)

Blast only run trips to destinations that we have already done a reccy too, we know the area, which beaches work on any wind direction, we know the best local eateries, the best bars, alternate tourist sights to check out etc etc

    13592607_10154132429746294_6987440866661209612_n Portugal

You get to ride with others often better than yourself so you also get the chance to improve. We will (when possible) take video through the day which really helps to analyse your technique. We will obviously always be on hand to offer advice for that next trick you want to nail.

There will be many other like minded people to kite with but also to simply share the stoke with....evenings will be spent laughing and sharing stories from the days sessions.

    13645268_10154132434781294_5184452214042694555_nGood food good company!

Experience pays....It's taken us many many years to find in our opinion some of the best spots you could ever dream to kitesurf. For example this will be our 9th year to Portugal, Hatteras 7 times and Brazil 5 times.

We are not travel agents, we just love doing kite trips to amazing locations with like minded people.

Check out some of videos from previous trips...
If you'd like more info on upcoming trips don't hesitate to contact us: info@blastkiteboarding.co.uk

  • The most versatile GoPro Mount - and it's cheap!

We repeatedly get asked where I mount the camera whilst kitesurfing, well after many trips out to Hatteras, North Carolina to join the legend that is Dimitri of Epic Kites, I discovered what I consider the most versatile GoPro mount ever!
Click on the images to enlarge!10488241_10152571626103764_3629105630967554587_nAbove: Marc sporting the Blast GoPro mount!

Yep you got it, in the mouth!
Whilst the GoPro is in your mouth the angle of vision will be similar to that of a helmet or chest mount but this is just the start. Simply remove the camera and hold it down nice and low, or maybe way above your head....get creative!
The reason Dimitri (and now me) use the Go Pro this way is it simply offers you so many options. The GoPro float on the back fits pretty well in the mouth and if I do drop the camera....it floats anyway so another tack and I've picked it back up and inserted it in the mouth this time a bit deeper!!
By having the GoPro in your mouth rather than attached to a helmet etc allows you to very quickly hold the camera wherever you need it, and so allowing you to get otherwise out of the question shots.10565167_10152579879296294_3707809003559736774_n
It even works for other sports like MTB, Snowboarding,SUP and Wakeboarding although I have been told off before now for using it in some cable parks!

Shots like this are only do able with the camera in your hand.....10564991_10152861867171294_705296971518044099_n

Please make sure the Float is very well attached to the rear screen of your GoPro, so far I have only lost one GoPro using this technique...the float was still in my mouth, the GoPro had gone!!

ps. a word of warning, if your doing video you may sound a bit scary with some gagging noises when playing back your days clips so don't forget to turn the sound down when editing!

  • The winds are returning, and we just got wet........

The last month or two the winds here have been errm lacking to say the very least. There was a slight chance of wind for us today and early am it was showing 20mph so a few of us met at Rest Bay as hopeful as ever.

Then the rain came, followed by the wind dropping right off a cliff edge!

We sat in the Blast Bus and chatted for what was probably an hour or two, repeatedly checking the wind, eventually we walked down onto the beach to get a better idea as it was slightly harder to tell up in the car park as it was cross shore.
Alex and I were keen to got straight on it, as we walked down ready to pump up it was now really blowing hard (weather station showed it as 30mph later when I checked) Anyway as soon as we'd pumped up our 9m's the wind quickly disappeared as quick as it had arrived!

We decided to launch the kites anyway just to see if we could remember how to fly them, we still have the CrazyFly Tango here on demo so I was keen to try this too.
We both eventually got in the water and attempted to kite but to be honest it was barely enough wind but I did manage a nice few smacks of some small waves and the sun came out so not such a bad time! Now we can't wait for some proper wind, hopefully very soon!
