Rest Bay Live Weather Station

Postby JamesVegas » 06 Sep 2020, 22:43

The weather station at Rest Bay is now up and running. It's situated on the front of the RNLI building so it's in an ideal location to give up to date conditions on the beach. It's best viewed on a mobile device. Current wind speed and direction is shown by the blue arrow the outside of the dial and an average over the last minute is displayed in red. There is no internet connection in the building so we are relying on a 4G signal, at times it seems to struggle but it should bounce back after a few moments.

It's been paid for and will be maintained by Kite Club Wales. There are some ongoing costs (web hosting, mobile data) which the club will also be covering.
If you would like to support the weather station the best way is to join the club via this link:
https://www.britishkitesports.org/join-british-kitesports/
Alternatively you can go to our GoFundMe page and help that way:
https://www.gofundme.com/manage/rest-bay-weather-station

It's a lot more complicated than I had originally anticipated but we had some amazing support from James at Bracklesham Boardriders.
Local kiter Steve Ellis (Speedy) came down to install the station, I'm not exaggerating when I say that it's been installed so well that it will probably be the last thing standing on the RNLI building! If you're in the market for some bespoke structural glass work check out:

As usual Alun has been super helpful, always on the end of the phone when we needed some advice.

Finally Chris Bluck from the Surf Club at Rest Bay has been really kind in letting us install the weather station on the RNLI building. He's bent over backwards to help out knowing how much a weather station will benefit local kitesurfers.

Great work by all concerned, especially giving up precious personal time researching and installing etc.

Height at beach level vs compression from the ridge will be different. If you jump on the water it isn’t suddenly more windy because your kite is higher :?

The same way the wind is different in the car park to the beach. I imagine it will be a few mph+ on the station vs conditions on the water but we’ll find out soon I guess!

My guess is it will over read by about 10-15% with Venturi and ridge lift in a SW . Won’t take long to calibrate but seems the Davis software doesn’t allow that . At aber I have calibration figures set for all directions which seem to work . If rest shows 20 kts sw I guess 15 on beach but we need some tome to see

I may be wrong but I think the station is actually under reading. The other day we were all out riding nicely but when I checked it was only showing around 14-15knots.

What direction was it Marc ?
It’s hard to see trend and instantaneous values as the uploads are throttled by Davis . I’d guess the reported apples is an average over the sample period which is 5 mins I think ; but don’t know

Yup, it just goes to show how hard these things are to maintain, and winter isn't even here yet!

Lifeguards are there this weekend for there last shift and I'm away so can't get in to re-boot it sorry.
